FAQ's

La seguridad en Guanajuato: el Estado de Guanajuato y la ciudad de Guanajuato: Is it safe to travel to Guanajuato?

I am from Guanajuato City and I feel safe living in here. That said, there are a few areas here that are known to not be safe (for instance on the trail out to La Bufa some people have been robbed). It’s a tourist city which aids in safety. Also, the presence of the government and university, as well as the topography all help to limit crime here in Gto.

However, there are parts of the state of Guanajuato that are known to be not safe: Celaya, Irapuato, Salamanca and smaller towns around them. In addition to it, if you conduct your research online, you will find out that Guanajuato State is dangerous. But, talking with expats I’ve found out from them this: Celaya & Salamanca are super dangerous. Irapuato is almost as bad. Silao and Leon aren’t great. Guanajuato and San Miguel are statistically some of the safer cities in the country.

From my personal perspective, as a teacher in public schools for Mexican teens, I think that the cartel related violence is ocurring mainly in the southern part of the State, while “local crimes” such as mugging, breaking in houses, etc., are more related to social problems such as: poverty, low levels of education in youngsters, low income, drugs and alcohol abuse, etc.

Once said this, I would like to invite you to connect with expats and visitors who have traveled in Guanajuato and local people. You can join some in the following FaceBook group:

There you can learn more from different points of view asking your questions, but basically from people who have experienced living in Guanajuato City.

Aprendizaje gramatical vs inmersivo: Do I need to study Grammar in order to learn and improve my Spanish skills?

Not necessarily. In Adelita when we tell to our students that our study programs are flexible this is what we mean: that even when we design and develop our programs based on Grammatical references, when the classes start, our teachers are capable to design along with their students the best way to develop their learning process. Therefore, teachers will ask which areas would be preferred to work in: speaking, talking, reading and writing. Also, together will determinate which study topics to follow. In addition, teachers will provide recommendations on how to keep practicing outside the classroom in order to keeo improving your Spanish skills.

In the othe hand, the school will provide certain tools to our teachers to determinate which teaching approach is best to be followed. For instance, if any student is going to be only for a couple of weeks and him/her is in an A1 level, then it’s going to be more menaingful his/her experience learning if we focus in studying and practicing general communication skills such as: interacting with local people in small conversations in restaurants, stores, bus stations, etc., rather tan learning different tenses or more complex types of sentences.

¿Las clases comienzan sólo los lunes?: I can only start my classes on Modays?

Gladly, you can start your classes any day of the week, all year around, except for holidays. However, you should know that every Monday our teachers start new study topics. This is why is a Good idea to arrive in Guanajuato during the weekend to start fresh on Monda. But, not to worry, if for any reason you’d need to come to Adelita any other day of the week and you’re going to be in group classes with other students, we will work close with the teachers to help you review the topics studied before your arrival, so you don’t miss a thing about what has been happening on those classes.

¿Hay dos tipos de costos por las clases: para locales y extranjeros?: Will I get to be overcharged in comparison to local students?

Not at all. Even when we show our pricing list for English classes, for instance, in pesos, that doesn’t mean that at Adelita our foreign students pay more for their classes: it’s more or les the same rates for all students. However, we should always consider that local people can not afford the same costs as a some traveler can do.

This is an excellent school. My husband and I have taken classes here in person for the past month. They have top notch educators and everyone has been wonderful. Rolando was prompt and professional responding to emails/coordinating classes.
